Seventh seed Fernando Verdasco defeated Igor Kunitsyn in the first round of French Open with 6-4, 6-2 and 6-2. In the second round, he defeated Florent Serra with 6-2, 6-2, 0-6 and 6-4 and in the third round, Fernando Verdasco defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber with 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (1-7) and 6-4. In the last three French Opens, he reached the fourth round but failed to enter quarter-finals.
In 2010 French Open, nineteenth seed Nicolas Almagro defeated Robin Haase in the first round with 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) and 6-4. In the second round, he defeated Steve Darcis with 6-3, 6-0, 7-5 and in the third round, he defeated Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr. with 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
Both the players has met three times in head-to-head, Nicolas Almagro never defeated Fernando Verdasco in the three matches including third round in 2009 French Open.
